The Ultimate Kid-Friendly Grand Teton Safari

An Insider’s Review

By:  local Teton Valley mom Devin Dwyer

If you are planning a family trip to Jackson Hole, I’m about to share a major mom secret.
A few weeks ago, we decided to do something a little different: we booked a private family safari into
Grand Teton National Park with Great Western Expeditions.

Even as locals who know these mountains inside and out, we wanted to see what the
experience was like for families.

As a mom of three young children, I’ll be honest—I had my doubts going in. I worried it might mean too much time buckled into a vehicle, too much waiting around, or a rigid schedule that would end in a toddler meltdown. I am so happy to report I was completely wrong. The pacing felt incredibly natural, the day was beautifully broken up, and the whole family had a genuine blast.

Whether you live down the road or are planning a once-in-a-lifetime summer vacation, here is a blueprint for the perfect kid-friendly park adventure:

The Town Square Kickoff

We met up with our private naturalist guides, David and Vinnie, in the late morning. Our first stop was a classic crowd-pleaser for little legs: the Jackson Town Square. The girls burnt off some energy running around while we snapped photos under the famous antler arches, followed by a quick ice cream treat at Jackson Drug. Starting with a fun, low-stakes stop sets the perfect tone for the kids before heading into the park.

Up-Close Wildlife (Without the Boredom)

We weren’t even out of town before the safari magic officially started. David and Vinnie spotted a moose on a hillside and safely pulled over so we could get a closer look. David quickly set up a high-powered, professional spotting scope.
Sure enough, a tiny newborn calf was nursing right there on the hillside. Watching a real-life wildlife documentary unfold through the scope from a safe distance was a total fairytale moment for the kids and easily one of the biggest highlights of the entire day.

Door-to-Door Service at the Visitor Center

Next up was the Craig Thomas Discovery & Visitor Center in GTNP. Traveling with a herd of kids means logistics can get exhausting. Great Western provides truly first-class service; they dropped us off right at the entrance, meaning zero long walks from crowded parking lots with strollers. It was the perfect spot for a restroom break, and the girls loved exploring the interactive, touch-friendly wildlife exhibits inside.

Pro Tip for Parents: This is the spot to ask the rangers about the National Park Service Junior Ranger program and grab your kids’ activity booklets!

A Picnic the Kids Actually Ate

From there, it was time for lunch. The Great Western team set up a gorgeous outdoor spread that was thoughtfully put together with kids in mind. The food was fresh and delicious: our kids actually sat down and ate it. Absolute win.

Boats, Waterfalls, and Hiking

With full bellies, we headed to Jenny Lake. We took the shuttle boat across the water, which is always a massive hit with kids—the boat ride itself is half the fun!
On the other side of the lake, we hiked up to Hidden Falls. It’s the perfect distance for young legs, featuring bridges and big rocks to climb. We even spotted two more moose along the trail! My husband decided to run ahead to catch the sweeping views from Inspiration Point, while the girls and I took our time making our way back to the dock for the return boat ride.

The Ultimate Grand Finale: Splashing Into Sunset

Our epic day was winding down, but the team saved the absolute best for last: String Lake for some water play and a sunset dinner.
Our girls are total water kids, and String Lake is famous for its shallow, crystal-clear, kid-safe shoreline. While they splashed and played, the Great Western team quietly and seamlessly set up a stunning dinner on the beach behind us. Having a gourmet dinner served right on the lakeshore while watching the sun dip behind the mountains was pure perfection.

The Takeaway for Families

If you think guided tours are too structured or “stuffy” for little kids, think again. Grand Teton National Park is an absolute wonderland for children, but managing the traffic, parking, gear, and food yourself can easily lead to burnout.
Letting a professional team handle the heavy lifting allowed us to completely switch off “management mode” and just enjoy being parents. If you are looking to treat your family (or visiting guests) to a flawless, stress-free day in the wild, this is exactly how you do it.
